My favorite thing to do as a nurse....

I could not get warm yesterday at work. All day my fingers were like ice. It didn't help that we're having unusually low temperatures for this time of year in Florida; it was in the 40's when I got to work...which brings me to one of my favorite things to do as a nurse!

It's easy. It's simple. A monkey could do it. And I LOVE IT.

This is usually the scenario...

Sick patient, usually older comes into the ICU from the ER or floor. At this point, we're usually changing their gown and they are shivering, freezing..."I'm so...cold!"

And then I say, "Aw, I will go get you a warm blanket."

I doubt that they expect an actual HOT blanket, but that is what I bring them. A nice, toasty warm blanket from the warmer. Aaaaaah, it feels amazing, like pulled fresh from the drier.

You can feel their relief as you cover them.

You're pretty much golden after that.

Happy patient= happy family= happy NURSE.

We love warm blankets in the burn unit...especially after we shower/bathe a patient and make them all cold. Good stuff.

My mom said that the only time she ever got a warm blanket was after giving birth...I got one in the ER once...so good!

Dude...I'd be all about those warm blankets in the morning! I'm AWFUL at getting out of bed if I'm cold...I seriously refuse to budge until I'm nice and warm. Gotta start wearing socks to bed, I swear! It's nice, though, that central Florida's finally catching up with normal weather :)

Omg, I LOVE fetching warm blankets (or sometimes fluids) for patients, it's such a novelty!! I particularly enjoyed it during my O&G rotation - getting warm blankets for little bubs and wrapping them up in it!!

I just read your comment on my blog and found yours. So adorable!

Are you doing YTT at Kripalu? If so, you don't need to prepare anything, just practice yoga when you can and go with an open mind. It will be great. :)

I totally agree!! I loved helping patients get comfortable/warm by giving them a WARM blanket and just seeing the contented looks on their faces!!

As a travel nurse working at Sarasota Memorial I remember they had pulled all the blanket warmers.

The rumor we heard was that a couple of the units like to turn them up as high as possible and warm up blankets for chilled patients. A good idea unless you're blanket warmer can be turned up to 150°, then not such a great idea for someone with fragile skin who can't move.

That was four years ago I wonder if they ever got them back?
